Streeterville
Like its neighbors to the south and north, condos reign among the Streeterville real estate options. Prices on Streeterville condos start in the mid $200’s. For Chicago real estate, that is still very good.
Located just east of the Magnificent Mile, the neighborhood of Streeterville has borders south at Grand Avenue, north at Oak Street, west at Michigan Avenue and east at Lake Michigan. Streeterville was settled roughly a century ago after taking the name of Captain George Wellington Streeter, who ran his boat aground at a sandbar at the base of Superior Street. Discovering that the border of Chicago ended at the shoreline, he convinced developers rebuilding Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 to dump excavated earth around the sandbar, thus connecting the sandbar to the shore. Streeter laid claim to this property and began selling plots of land until the City arrested him for a minor offense and took over the land. The area is now home to some of the most expensive Chicago real estate.
Luxury high-rise condominiums comprise the majority of the Streeterville real estate options. Most buildings offer such amenities as 24 hour doormen, pools, fitness centers, valet parking, and often dry cleaning. One of the more popular buildings in Streeterville is 600 N. Lake Shore Drive, offering gorgeous lake and skyline views with units ranging from $370,000 to $1.9 million. Another luxurious building is the Olympia Centre at 161 E. Chicago Ave. Condominiums in this exclusive building range from the mid $300’s to about $2 million.
The neighborhood’s proximity to the Magnificent Mile means that the local restaurants are among the best in the world, as is the shopping. Streeterville is home to the John Hancock building, site of the famous Signature Room with its breathtaking views of the lake and Chicago skyline. Also located in Streeterville is the Water Tower Place, an indoor mall on Michigan Avenue with a variety of high-end retailers and designer boutiques. With nearly 50 restaurants and over twenty bars and clubs within the six block radius, Streeterville residents have plenty of entertainment options from which to choose.
Art enthusiasts will love the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and the Smith Museum of Stained Glass, all of which are within walking distance of Streeterville properties.
The bike and jogging trails along Lake Michigan are easily accessible from the Streeterville neighborhood, making it a popular neighborhood for families, dog-owners, and those who love to be outside. Navy Pier close by offers a variety of options for recreation, and many Streeterville residents have the fortunate advantage of watching the annual Air Show and weekly fireworks display from their windows.
Families with children will find a couple of different private and public school options. The Latin School of Chicago and the William B. Ogden School are the most convenient. Streeterville is also home to branches of Loyola and Northwestern Universities.
The many taxis and modes of public transportation within Streeterville make this a popular area for Chicago real estate. The CTA Red line stops at Chicago and Grand Avenues and various CTA buses run throughout the neighborhood.
